Places We Love: Wild Bird Seeds & Such

If you like to feed the back-yard birds as much as I do, you probably buy a lot of seed. One of my favorite places to stock up on bird-feeding supplies is Wild Bird Seeds & Such, an adorable little shop in Brielle, New Jersey.

The owner, Debby, is very knowledgeable about bird species, their habits, and what they like to eat — and she loves to “talk birds” with her customers. She even has several feeders outside the back of her shop to keep you entertained while you’re browsing — and there’s a lot to explore and discover at every turn.

One of my regular purchases at Debby’s shop is the Scarlett brand of deck-and-patio bird seed. This shell-free blend is great because whatever seeds fall to the ground will not sprout in your yard or flowerbeds. The deck-and-patio mix consists of shelled peanuts, sunflower seeds and chips, cracked corn, nyjer seed, safflower, and white millet. It comes in 20-pound recyclable paper bags ($25.23 per bag).

This seed attracts a range of feathered friends to my feeders, including cardinals, Carolina wrens, sparrows, house finches, mourning doves, and the occasional blue jay.

Another “must buy” when I shop local at Wild Bird Seeds & Such is the C&S brand of sweet corn logs ($5.49 for a two pack). I started putting out the corn logs to discourage the squirrels from raiding my feeders, but the birds like to nibble on the corn, too, especially after a good rainstorm. I think the rain may soften the corn, and the birds go bonkers for it. There’s a corn-only version of the logs and another style that mixes sweet corn and ground peanuts. If you are looking for a new feeder or a colorful bird house to adorn your yard, Wild Bird Seeds & Such is the place to go. You’ll find an amazing assortment of houses in different price ranges to fit different sizes and types of birds. Same for the selection of feeders. You’ll find tube feeders, hanging feeders, platform feeders, hummingbird feeders, suet feeders, and even some squirrel-busters. A couple of years ago, for my birthday, I treated myself to a handcrafted wood birdhouse with a copper-trimmed shake roof from Debby’s shop. I had it mounted on a tall 4x4 post, and the birdhouse reigns proudly over my garden, surrounded by daylilies, Japanese painted ferns, and hostas.

Wild Bird Seeds & Such is an easy 15-minute drive from our beach house rental in Belmar, via Route 71 south. It’s a wonderful place to shop for unique gifts to bring home from your vacation at the Jersey Shore — for you or someone else! Please note that the owner requires customers to wear face coverings while shopping, and she will even offer to carry your big bags of seed to the car if you need help.
