  • 8 Ways To Enjoy The Water In Belmar

Whether you prefer the rippling waves of the Atlantic Ocean, or the gentle tides of the bay or inlet, an outing near the water is a must for your Jersey Shore bucket list. Here in Belmar, you’ll find plenty of ways to “whet” your appetite for salty adventures and water sports during summer vacation. 1. Fishing On A Charter Boat Or In The Surf A half- or full-day fishing trip in the Atlantic Ocean can be a fun change of pace during your vacation in Belmar. The Belmar Marina is home to one of New Jersey's largest fleet of fishing head boats (party boats) and private fishing charters. Fluke (summer flounder), sea bass, bluefish, and tile fish are some of the species you can catch locally here. Surf fishing from the coastline is another place to cast your line if you are more of a landlubber than a sailor. The jetties by the Belmar Fishing Club (near the Belmar-Avon border) are popular fishing spots among the locals. Or, cast your line into the sea from the sandy shores of Belmar beach. In addition to half- and full-day fishing trips, you also can book fireworks, sunset, and whale-watching cruises on some of the Belmar Marina boats. Each vessel is independently owned and operated, so contact the boat directly for pricing and ticket information (link below). Whale-Watching Excursion There's nothing more spectacular than seeing a humpback whale breaching right before your eyes! Even catching a glimpse of a whale tail or a water spout breaking through the waves is also very exciting! The popularity of whale watching in the Belmar region of the Jersey Shore has grown in recent years as the marine mammals have become more prevalent off the New Jersey coast. At the Belmar Marina, three boats currently offer whale-watching excursions: the SS Miss Belmar, the Jersey Girl, and Ocean Explorer. You might even see dolphins, cool coastal birds, and other sea life during your outing. 3. Kayaking Set sail on the open water in an ocean kayak built for one or two. The Belmar Manutti Marina has a public launching ramp, and the town and also rents kayak storage space at L Street beach on a seasonal basis. The Shark River Inlet in Belmar is another great place for kayaking, especially if you prefer calmer waters. RELATED : Best Parks And Playgrounds In Belmar 4. Two local Belmar businesses, Endless SUP Company and Eastern Lines Surf Shop , offer SUP lessons and board rentals from May through September. Endless SUP has a spot right at L Street beach, while Eastern Lines is located on Ocean Avenue across from 18th Avenue beach. • Places We Love: Lofidelic Record Shop In Belmar NJ

After parting ways with the corporate world in 2017, Lofidelic Records owner David Hernandez was inspired to follow in his parents' footsteps and open an independent record store in Belmar, New Jersey. With his son Ethan by his side, Hernandez is spinning his love of vintage vinyl into a successful second career — and sharing the joy of record collecting with young and old alike. Tell us a little bit about Lofidelic Records in Belmar. Lofidelic Records is a vinyl-only record store that sells tons of new and used vinyl records from the 1950's to present. We try to stock every genre under the sun. We also sell turntables, speakers, shirts, and turntable supplies. What was the inspiration for your business? My parents owned a record store in Jersey City around 1968 and records were always a part of our family. I can clearly remember my parents’ record shelf in our apartment that had thousands of records in it, some that I still own to this day. During my high school days in the mid-1980's, I started deejaying and began buying records for my own collection. Using my lunch money to go buy records at Jacks Music in Red Bank was a weekly event, so my own collection started to grow quickly. I even worked at a tiny record shop in Long Branch called Street Beat Records during the late 1980's. This was my inspiration for Lofidelic Record Shop in Belmar, NJ. RELATED: Belmar Business Spotlight - Taylor Hardware Store What do you enjoy most about being part of the local business community? Belmar is a great Jersey Shore town with a lot of potential. I have lived here for over 15 years, and I can’t see myself living anywhere else. Over the years, we have seen some great businesses come and go, and I really believe that the heart of a great town is the businesses and the local community. I want my Lofidelic Record Shop in Belmar, NJ, to be known for…. I want it to be known for being a cool-vibe, chill-out shop that people can walk into and be amazed by everything they see on the walls and hear from the speakers. We want our shop to be inviting to the first-time record buyer and the die-hard collector that has been collecting for years. We want everyone to have a great experience when visiting our shop. If I was asked to describe my background in a few sentences, I would tell you that…. I am a die-hard music lover, and I love everything about records and record collecting. Since I opened the shop, my music taste has expanded very quickly. I am now collecting records that I never thought would be in my collection, and that helps me interact with a lot of people that come in. My professional background has always been management and leadership and, hopefully, that helps me lead people to the right recommendations on new records. RELATED: Belmar Business Spotlight - Midnight Candle Company When I’m not working, I like to…. Spend time with Ethan, of course! Mondays are our day off, and we try not to do anything related to records. I always ask Ethan what he wants to do on his day off, and the answer is usually ride his bike on the boardwalk, go to the Belmar Library, or visit the parks around town. As much as we love being in our shop and hanging out with our friends that come in, we also need time to do some other fun activities around town. What is the biggest lesson you have learned being in business for yourself? The biggest lesson is learning that you always need to find a way to get your business name out there. Don’t sit back and expect people to know about your place just by word of mouth. You need to go out and introduce yourself to all the local businesses, and you should be finding ways to network and partner up with different shops and venues so that everyone helps promotes everyone else's business. For sides, we chose basmati rice, crispy vegetable fritters, and freshly baked garlic naan (great for dipping in the savory sauces). “From vibrant curries to tantalizing tandoori delights, each dish is a celebration of authentic Indian cuisine.” — India Garden website The opening of India Garden in Belmar is a hot topic on social media for good reason. • Favorite Flea Markets Near Belmar

If you have a penchant for vintage pieces and antique treasures, you won’t want to miss two of the best flea markets at the Jersey Shore: the Historic Village at Allaire flea market in Farmingdale, New Jersey, and the Giant Flea Market in Ocean Grove. The village is an ultimate day-trip destination unto itself if you want to experience a glimpse of life in the late 1800s. As a nonprofit organization that is supported solely by donations, the Historic Village at Allaire holds numerous fund-raising events throughout the year. Their flea markets are usually held once or twice a month in the spring, summer, and fall. A donation of $5.00 per person is required to enter the flea market. The admission price includes access to the 40 acres of picturesque village grounds and historic buildings. (It reminds me of Pennsbury Manor in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, if you are familiar with that.) Admission is free for children age 11 and younger. Vendor tables are $45.00 in advance and $55.00 day of the market. Below is a sample of the unique antiques and collectibles that you will find at the Allaire Village flea market. When they say “giant,” they mean it – with over 300 vendors and food trucks to keep you energized for a day of shopping and exploring this Victorian-era seashore community. Below are some photos that I took during a previous Ocean Grove Giant Flea Market. I rode my bike there from Belmar and had a heck of a time carting home all my treasures in the handlebar basket! I've since added a large cargo basket to the back of my bike, so I'll be well-prepared for next time. Parking in Ocean Grove is tricky, so get there early for the best chance of finding a spot. You’ll usually come across some yard sales at nearby homes on flea market weekends – a bonus for those who really love to bargain hunt. The Ocean Grove Chamber of Commerce also sponsors two arts and crafts shows in the spring and fall every year. The Spring Fling Arts and Crafts Show is scheduled for Saturday, May 4, 2024. The Fall Harvest Festival will take place Saturday, October 5, 2024. • Taste Of Belmar: Reuben Dip With Berg’s Beef Brisket [RECIPE]

The Belmar Beachcomber's “Taste of Belmar” series features recipes contributed by local restaurants in Belmar, New Jersey, as well as recipes featuring locally sourced ingredients. In this edition, we share a popular recipe for Reuben dip featuring corned beef brisket from Berg’s Smoked Meat & Poutine. You could say that the Belmar St. Patrick’s Day Parade marks the “unofficial” end of winter in our region of the Jersey Shore. The Belmar Parade has been held the first Sunday in March for over 50 years, so it’s a milestone on the calendar, as locals set their sights on the approaching warmer spring weather — and ultimately the return of our beloved beach season. Another reason to love the Belmar Parade — aside from the fun floats and pipes and drum bands — is that it provides the perfect excuse to have a party. In my case, a Parade Day brunch with signature cocktails including Bloody Marys, mimosas, and Irish coffee with Bailey’s. In addition to green bagels and spinach dip, my Parade Day brunch typically includes festive fare like Irish soda bread and Guinness brown bread to keep the St. Patrick’s theme going. This year, I tried a new recipe for Reuben dip, which I found on the AllRecipes website (go to recipe). The star of my rendition of Reuben dip was the tender and flavorful corned beef from Berg’s Smoked Meat & Poutine on Main Street in Belmar. The corned beef gets mixed with shredded Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and a blend of Russian dressing and mayonnaise. About Berg's Smoked Meat & Poutine According to their website, Berg’s in Belmar is the “only place in New Jersey offering authentic Montreal smoked meat and poutine.” For those new to poutine, think of it as a Canadian style of New Jersey’s beloved disco fries, only the fries in poutine are topped with cheese curds and beef gravy. The corned beef at Berg’s is made from beef brisket, which they dry cure with 12 different spices for 21 days. The meat is then smoked over oak wood for eight hours and steamed for three hours before it is hand sliced to order. The Reuben dip recipe calls for 8 ounces of corned beef, so I bought a half-pound piece at Berg’s and shredded it at home, which was very easy to do. Berg’s Smoked Meat & Poutine 1405 Main Street Belmar, New Jersey 07719 732-749-3266 www.bergssmokedmeat.com Reuben Dip Recipe Ingredients ½ cup mayonnaise ½ cup Thousand Island dressing 16 ounces sauerkraut, rinsed and squeezed dry 8 ounces shredded corned beef 16 ounces shredded Swiss cheese Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix mayonnaise and dressing together in a small bowl; set aside. Spread sauerkraut into a 9x13-inch baking dish. Layer corned beef, Swiss cheese, and mayonnaise mixture on top of sauerkraut. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes. Serve hot with crackers or small cocktail breads. On a personal note, I did not care for the taste of sauerkraut in the dip (not a fan of sauerkraut overall), so the next time I make this recipe, I will substitute it with homemade coleslaw. And I will definitely make this dip for next year's Parade Day brunch — with the delicious corned beef brisket from Berg’s!
