"One arm at a time! One arm at a time!" bellowed the surfing instructor as his young charge padded out into the gentle waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Back on the sand, the rest of that day's hopefuls looked on, amped and eagerly awaiting their turn in the water. For the instructors and pupils alike, Summertime Surf School in Belmar, New Jersey, is one summer school everybody loves to attend.
In addition to surfing camps for kids ages 6 to 16, Summertime Surf offers private surfing lessons and standup paddleboard (SUP) lessons for children, adults, families, and organizations.
"Our mission is to provide the ultimate environment for teaching and learning the practices and values of the surf and ocean lifestyle," according to the Summertime Surf brochure and website.
Surfboards are provided for participants. Weekly kids surfing camps are offered Monday through Friday at 3rd Avenue beach in Belmar. Half-day sessions take place from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Full-day camps go from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The instructors and camp counselors are experienced surfers who excel at providing an unforgettable first surfing experience centered around ocean safety and environmental responsibility. Gift certificates are available for all Summertime Surf School experience packages.
