The Belmar Beachcomber’s “Taste of Belmar” series features recipes contributed by owners and chefs of restaurants in Belmar, New Jersey. In this edition, we share a recipe for spicy tomatillo salsa from 10th Ave. Burrito Co., a popular local spot that specializes in fresh Mexi-Cali cuisine.
“This is a deep-flavored salsa with a nice kick but not overwhelmingly spicy,” says Brian Katz, owner of 10th Ave. Burrito Co. “The recipe is from my head chef Jose. His grandmother used to make this every Sunday while he was growing up in Mexico.”
Recipe: Spicy Tomatillo Salsa
20 tomatillos
1 oz. chili de árbol (Mexican chili pepper)
5 cloves of garlic, chopped
1/2 yellow onion, diced
1/2 lime
Put tomatillos on an open fire and char them till they turn brown. in a sauté pan, sauté the chili de arbol, chopped garlic, and diced onion. Allow to cool and then combine everything in a blender and squeeze in the lime. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
